On Saturday 14th September 2019, Pioneer International University in collaboration with Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) held a Careers Training in Muranga. The Theme this year was 21st Century Careers, Workforce for the Future. Today’s world is very different from the one all of us walked into after leaving high school two or three decades ago. A recent estimate by the World Economic Forum demonstrates that 60% of children getting into primary school today will work in careers that do not exist. The question therefore is, how do we prepare for such an uncertain world? In other words, how do you determine taking a University course that potentially prepares students for that future? There is need therefore for a paradigm shift in terms of the models and approaches that those charged with the responsibility of guiding students on careers use in preparing those students as they make choices about their future careers.
As Pioneer International University, we recognize and appreciate this paradigm shift and the disruption it portends for the world. Accordingly, we continue to integrate all our programs with the technological footprints that are required for this uncertain yet very great future. Education and civilization that we continue to celebrate today is based not only on skills acquisition but more on how to map out the way to navigate oneself through the sands of time. In short, education is a means to an end -a blueprint of life. As persons entrusted to play a sacrosanct role in shaping the future of this country through career advice and guidance, let us appreciate that the future of work is more about skills, meaning that knowledge in one field can be very beneficial to another. This requires having and instilling the right attitude to our students, being transformative mentors to our students, a sacred assignment that all of us seated here today are entrusted to do.
Finally, we must embrace positive disruptive approaches to the way we guide and advise our students. On behalf of Pioneer International University, we commit to walking this journey with you through constructive and continuous engagement as we learn from one another how to speak to the future and hence prepare our students for the 21st Century careers and workforce.
